How to search

You can search by keyword, free text or by spatial area, or a combination of both. Currently these options are available through drop-down menus.

How do you want to search?


  1. Simple search by keyword(s)

    i.e. select keyword(s) from a list.

    Use this if you know the keywords which you want to search on.

  2. Hierarchical search by theme(s) then keyword(s)

    i.e. select the theme(s) then select the keyword(s) from a list.

    Use this to narrow down keywords based on top-level themes.

  3. Free text search

    i.e. type in any text and search the database for data sets which contain the text in their titles.

    Use this if you are searching for a specific word or phrase, such as a species name or author.

  4. Spatial search

    i.e. define a geographical area (such as one or more regions or a selection of quarter degree squares and search the database for data sets which are relevant to the selected area.

    Use this if you are searching for data related to a specific geographical area, such as a mine or town.
