Geological Survey of Namibia falls under the Ministry of Mines and Energy.

AIMS

  • To promote sustainable development and investment by providing and enabling an environment conducive to the optimum utilisation of Namibia's geological resources;
  • to promote and to a certain extent, provide education in the fields of earth sciences;
  • to enhance the understanding of the geo-environment and its interaction with our life support system (air, water, mineral resources, energy) for its current and future welfare;
  • to minimise the impact of the utilisation of Namibia's geological resources on the environment by pro-active and reactive scientific appraisal of the geological aspects of new development; and
  • to initiate and partake in multi-disciplinary and integrated land-use planning.

ACTIVITIES

  • Waste management, geo-environmental engineering and environmental protection research;
  • environmental pollution; covering surface and groundwater contamination and air pollution;
  • geohazards assessments including: earthquakes, volcanoes, landslides, erosion and floods;
  • promote environmental policies on sustainable earth resources exploitation; and
  • land-use planning with respect to sustainable development goals.
