The Henties Bay Marine and Coastal Resources Research Centre falls under the University of Namibia.

VISION
To be a leading centre of excellence for research in marine and coastal resources.

MISSION
To undertake research in Namibia to promote sustainable development and utilisation of marine and coastal resources.

ACTIVITIES

  • Mariculture, involving the farming of shellfish (abalone and oyster) and fin fish;
  • seaweeds, with special emphasis on resource assessment, farming and utilisation;
  • mushroom farming - looking at using seaweed as a substrate for growing;
  • coastal agriculture and plant biodiversity;
  • harnessing of renewable sources of energy - solar, wind, biogas and tidal waving;
  • alternative water sources and fog formation; and
  • coastal environment and how it influences corrosion, as well as dune formation and stabilisation / movement.
