ACTIVITIES

  • Conducts rhino conservation projects;
  • promotes and supports: private concessions and community conservation; rhino and elephant monitoring in the arid areas; scientific data collection and eco tourism development planning in the remote rural areas;
  • aims at species survival as a vital component of biodiversity, in co-operation with traditional leaders, local government and rural communities in the western Kunene Region.
  • facilitates and supports community involvement through: management planning for wildlife projects in the desert habitiat; information and awareness programmes; self-help income-generating projects for women;
  • supports research, monitoring and training for local communities and co-operates in the development of economically based tourism ventures;
  • actively conducts training in basic ecology and basic tourism;
  • promotes benefits to communities through live wildlife utilisation by working in co-operation at local, national, regional and international levels;
  • supports local and visiting scientists, including wildlife species management; and
  • gives formal presentations at tertiary institutions.

SPECIAL NOTE
SRT is active in desert wildlife conservation specialising in training in the conservation of the black rhino. SRT is mandated by the Namibian government to monitor the black rhino in communal areas. SRT has been instrumental in the establishment of one of the first community based species survival projects for the rhino in Africa, with direct community involvement in the conservation of rhino and benefits received through conservation and tourism going to the local population.
