MISSION

To coordinate aquatic research in Namibia and foster closer co-operation between the different institutions and individuals involved in the research, conservation and management of wetlands in Namibia.

AIMS

  • To protect and maintain essential ecological functions and the biological diversity of Namibia's wetland ecosystem;
  • to create additional wetland conservation areas;
  • to promote integrated land and water management; and
  • to raise awareness of wetland values and threats.

ACTIVITIES

  • Production of wetland awareness and environmental education resource materials;
  • development of a wetland database;
  • development of a draft wetland policy for Namibia;
  • development and assessment of routine monitoring and surveys of wetland ecosystems;
  • coordination of joint research projects, papers and conferences;
  • integrate input into national and regional wetland related activities;
  • assist educational institutions with information for lectures and practicals; and
  • assist in arrangements for World Wetland and World Water Day.

SPECIAL NOTE
The Wetlands Working Group of Namibia falls under the auspices of the Southern African Society of Aquatic Sciences. It is cross sectoral (government, non-governmental, local authorities and academic institutions).
