Environmentalists of the Decade announced
2007 Annual Corporate & Donor Function, and Environmental Awards
Namibia Nature Foundation held its annual corporate and donor function on 22nd November 2007 at the Polytechnic of Namibia's Hotel and Tourism school.
This occasion was NNF's opportunity to thank all its corporate sponsors and donors for their support during the year, and this appreciation was marked by the presentation of locally-made crafts sourced from the Penduka Trust in Katutura, Windhoek.
The NNF annual corporate and donor function is also the occasion at which the Environment Award is presented each year, whereby the contribution made by an individual or individuals who have significantly furthered the ideals of sustainable development and wise environmental and natural resource management in Namibia is publicly acknowledged. 2007 is the NNF's 20th birthday, and for this reason, the award was for the "Environmentalist of the Decade".
Two awards for Environmentalist of the Decade were presented – one for impact at the regional level, and one for impact at national level. The regional environmentalist of the decade was announced as Chief Joseph Tembwe Mayuni, and the national award went to Dr. Mary Seely.
Chief Mayuni was described at the event as a leader, a visionary and a motivator, who is a tireless champion for conservation and community development. Dr. Mary Seely was recognised as an educator, scientist, originator and implementer of good new ideas, a scholar-practitioner in environmental management, and an ambassador for the Namib Desert, for Namibia's environment and for sustainable development.
